Everything old is new again - and this classic design has been creeping into photos everywhere! Let Mike guide you through John Flynn’s method - no small templates or tiny pieces - all the arcs come from strip sets with an extra seam to make the curve. This is not a quick and easy quilt, but you won’t believe how nicely it all fits together!

Mike invented and designed Equality and would love to teach you how to make it from start to finish.  This easy-to-piece quilt is great in a spectrum of colors, in an assortment of neutrals or in a collection of pinks and reds. Kits are cut as shown in batiks. Very little waste makes this an affordable project that finishes to 53 x 68.

Panel Bargello Throw

(Beginner) |1 Tuesday | Jan. 23 | 9 am - Noon

Start with a horizontal panel and 10 coordinating fat quarters. Follow Mike’s plan for an easy bargello with a half-block drop and you’ll have this throw ready in no time. This is a great beginner quilt.

Spiral Star

 (Beyond Beginner) | 2 Tuesdays | Feb. 27 & March 13 | 9 am - Noon
You may have seen a square version of this quilt on social media. This is Mike’s version using 18 gradated blue fabrics set against a black background. Cut strips and sew your strata; then use a wedge roller to cut them to a perfect size. This is not a beginner quilt - but with Mike’s guidance, this queen-sized show-stopper will fit together like a dream.

The Barn

1 Saturday| February 3| 11 am - 2 pm

With Merle’s paper-piecing expertise you will make your own little barn scene complete with silo, windmill and fence.  Merle teaches you the process and tools necessary for successful paper piecing while you make this adorable 14-inch barn wall hanging.  Pattern by MH Designs.

Ombre Star

(Beyond Beginner) |2 Tuesdays| Jan. 30 & Feb 13  | 9 am - 12 pm

Similar to Mike’s Spiral Star, this Ombre Star is much simpler letting the ombre gradated print do the magic for you. Only two fabrics, black background and ombre are required. No strips and strata to sew together, yet a stunning result. It looks difficult but Mike will show you how to make this show-stopper large throw.

Honeymoon Bargello

2 Tuesday| Feb. 27 & March 13 | 1-4 pm

This is a pattern by Reneata Greene that makes use of two color ways—purple and raspberry.  Mike will take you through his method to create this stunning quilt.  There is a lot of sewing involved—but it is all straight quarter-inch work.  You will be amazed at how the heart will appear!

Mega Bow Tucks

 1 Saturday | Advanced | February 17  | 10 am - 5 pm

Mega Bow Tucks tote (26” x 9” x 17”) is the largest Bow Tucks ever! Mega has swivel hook hardware at each side to give it a smaller silhouette toward the top. They can be released to increase the storage capacity. Donnarae shows you how to make the bag and how to add a luggage strap to fit over your suitcase’s handle. You will love all the inside and outside pockets.

Hound Dog

Hound Dog shows off the perfect print or novelty fabric and surrounds it with complementary, fun fabrics to make the whole quilt “howl.” With Merle’s patience and assistance you will learn the basics of cutting, piecing, pressing and all that is involved in making a quilt top, start to finish.

Shadow Cabin

Mike is here to help you make this variation of a log cabin, cut from shaded ombre fabrics. The unique combination of ombre fabric and a snappy solid creates this wonky and very interesting “Shadow Cabin.”

 3D Fabric Flower Wreath

This is a beautiful project that you should be able to finish during class! You will uses your own sewing machine to do the “sketching" for the flowers and leaves - cut them out - and hot glue them to make a wreath. A quick, easy, and unique art project for you to keep or to give as a gift.

Class Policies

In an effort to make every class the best possible experience for everyone:  

  • Payment of class fees must accompany registration.  Please call us if you wish to pay by credit card.
  • Once you have paid and registered for class, please come in and pick up a class supply list.  Please purchase and assemble all required supplies before class.
  • Calico Hutch offers a 20% discount on all supplies purchased for classes.
  • If you choose to mail in your payment and want us to mail you a class supply list, please enclose with your payment a self-address post-paid envelope.
  • For common courtesy to the teacher and other students, please arrive early to set up your machine, organize all required class supplies and be ready to start at the designated time.  Late arrivals disrupt valuable class instruction.
  • Provided we receive seven days notice, we offer a full refund as a store credit if you cannot attend a class.  A store credit is given if we cancel a class due to low enrollment.
  • Familiarity with your sewing machine is a requirement.
  • Due to allergies Calico Hutch is a “scent-free” environment.  Thank you for respecting the health of others.
